The Art Of Wine Tasting

Even though many just assume that wine tasting is sipping, swishing, and swallowing - many are amazed to find that it’s actually a bit more. Wine tasting is more of an art, an art that is used to distinguish the taste of fine wines.

Wine can be a tasty and refreshing drink - if the bottle was stored correctly and aged properly.Wine tasting begins with the swishing. The reason why wine tasters swish the wine around in their mouths is to get the taste.

Both the front and the back areas of the tongue contain taste buds, although neither one has any distinct sensation in taste. Taste buds can detect food and liquid that is bitter, salty or sweet, without a problem.

To get the proper taste from wine however, you need to swish it around in your mouth and allow your taste buds and sense of smell to bring out the unique and fine flavors in the wine.
When you have a cold however, the wine can taste very different. When tasting your wine, your sense of smell has a major impact on the taste. What many fail to realize, is that over 75% of our taste is due to our sense of smell.

When we have a cold, our sense of smell is affected. Therefore, when eating or tasting wine with a cold, the taste will appear different. Wine tasters all over the world will tell you that tasting wine is more about a sense of smell than the actual taste buds.
The art of wine tasting is indeed an art.

Wine tasters do however, follow some general guidelines and rules that judge how great a wine is. These techniques can help you bring the most out of your wine, providing you follow them and know how to bring out the taste. The first thing to do with wine is to look. With wine, you can tell quite a bit about it by looking at it.

You should always start by pouring the wine into a clear glass, then taking a few minutes to look at the color. As far as the color goes, white whines aren’t white, but actually yellow, green, or brown. Red wines on the other hand are normally a pale red or dark brown color.

Red wine gets better with age, while white whines get more stale with age.Next, is the smell of the wine, which you should do in two steps. You should start with a brief smell to get a general idea of the wine, then take a deep, long smell. This deeper smell should allow you take the flavor of the wine in.

The more experienced wine tasters prefer to sit back a bit and think about the smell before they actually taste the wine.

Last but not least, is to taste the wine. To properly taste the wine, you should first take a sip, swish it around in your mouth, and then swallow. Once you swish the wine around in your mouth, you’ll bring out the rich and bold flavors of the wine.

After swallowing, you’ll be able to distinguish the after taste of the wine, and the overall flavor. Once you have looked at the wine, smelled it, and finally tasted it, you’ll be able to evaluate the wine from a taster’s standpoint.

This is the easiest way to determine the quality of the wine, and whether or not it has been properly stored and aged. As with all things in life - the more you taste wine - the better you will get at distinguishing the unique flavors.

Wine Storage Tips

A fine meal would not be complete without having a drink of fine wine to accompany it. If you often hold dinner parties at home, or you feel like spicing up a regular dinner with red or white wine, you can do so if you have your own wine storage at home.

Here are some useful tips on wine storage:If you open a bottle of wine and don't consume the entire contents, then you need to store it in a cool, dry place. Just put the cork back on and you can store the wine in the refrigerator for a maximum of three days.

If you plan to keep the wine for longer than three days, instead of just re-corking the wine, a stopper should be placed on top of the bottle. Then, it should be aired out using a pump for a longer storage time. For wine lovers out there who have a large number of wine bottles – or cases - to keep, there are several effective methods that you can use to preserve and keep your wine for absolute enjoyment:

1. Offsite wine storage.

If you have a large collection of a variety of wines, you can have them stored professionally at an offsite storage. Commercial wine storage facilities charge a surprisingly minimal amount to let you sit back and relax at home while they take care of your wine bottles stored at the perfect temperature and humidity.

2. Wine cellar, refrigerator or closet If you want to have easy access to your wine collection right in your own home, you can do so by having your own wine storage system. Remember that the culprits to an imperfect wine storage are incorrect or insufficient heat, humidity and light.

Make sure that light does not seep into your wine closet, cellar or refrigerator. It is also important to keep the temperature at a constant degree. For red wines, the ideal temperature is 10 to 18 degrees Celsius while white wines are best kept at 7 to 15 degrees Celsius.

Better yet, consult the vintner or the person from whom you bought the wine to know the exact temperature range to store the wine. Wine bottles should also be stored lying on their sides so that the cork can be kept moist – this is what keeps air away from the liquid.

Once the cork is dry, the wine will be oxidized and lose its quality. Wine certainly does improve with age so you need to control all the factors affecting the life and quality of your wine collection if you want to enjoy them for a long time.

Dealing With Hangovers

A hangover is something that just about all of us have experienced at some point in time.
After spending a night out drinking, you may wake up in the morning with your head feeling heavy and your stomach in knots. At that moment, you probably decided that you would quit drinking, to prevent this awful feeling from happening again.

No matter how hard you may have tried though, chances are that it happened again.Even though we all know that alcohol can lead to hangovers, the cause of a hangover is something we don’t know.

Alcohol does have some positive effects on the body, although it can also lead to negative effects such as hangovers. Some doctors will actually recommend it, while others will tell you never to drink it. Even though drinking is good, moderation is the key.

The easiest way to avoid hangovers is to drink in moderation - and never get drunk. As many of us already know, whisky, bourbon, and wine can result in a much harder hangover than vodka or beer.

For many people, chemicals in wines or yeast found in unfiltered beers can result in headaches. Beer, wine, and liquor can be fun and relaxing to drink, although if you aren’t careful you can easily get a headache or a hangover.

Even though the cause for hangovers is unknown, it has been proven that the headaches associated with hangovers stem from dehydration. With alcohol being a diuretic, it will make you urinate quite often.

Therefore, if you drink alcohol or beer on a daily basis, your body will remain dehydrated. When you wake up in the morning with a bad headache and turn to coffee, which is also a diuretic, the process of dehydration actually gets worse.

You’ll also need to do something with the alcohol that has been left in your body. Even though a hangover can make you want to stay in bed, the secret to getting yourself back on track is movement.

To rid your body of the alcohol, you’ll need sweat. Sweating gets the toxins out of your body, and helps you feel better. You can exercise or have sex to get over a hangover (I know which I'd do!)as the heat your body emits will be too much for alcohol toxins to handle.

Although a hangover can be a bit of a pain, it can be prevented. The first rule of drinking any type of alcoholic beverage is to never drink on an empty stomach. If you eat a good meal before you start drinking, you’ll find that the food can help you digest the alcohol much better.

Hangover Cures

Okay, so let's look at a few things we can eat or drink to fix a hangover. Let's be a bit less sensible and have what the body craves. I totally believe in this. If I'm thirsty, I'll drink, if after a few beers I feel hungry I want a donner kebab or a curry, that's what I'll do. And when I wake up in the morning with a hangover, I'll go for something that my body wants!

You get up feeling dehydrated. So a glass of water is the answer. You're lacking in sugar, so a fizzy drink- I go for Tizer- is usually a good cure and if you're hungry, so a cooked breakfast is a fantastic hangover cure.

It doesn't have to be bacon, eggs, sausage, black pudding, fried bread and tomatoes swimming in a pan of cooking oil. There is such a thing as a healthy cooked breakfast. Grill a few slices of bacon and sausages and have a poached or scrambled egg. And don't put any butter on your toast. Have a cup of sweet tea to keep you hydrated.

And if all else fails, have a few painkillers and an alka selzer. Don't fight a hangover by just suffering, fix your hangover by having what your body craves.

A Look At Champagne

Traditionally, Champagne has always a way to celebrate milestones or toast the bride and groom on their marriage. Considered to be a flexible beverage, Champagne can be served with a meal or with dessert. For many years, this truly refreshing and exotic drink has been used as a way of celebration and just enjoying the times that lie ahead.

Champagne comes from the vineyards of the French region. If you get a bottle and notice Champagne imprinted on the label, you can rest assured that the bottle was produced in the vineyards of France. If you don’t get Champagne that was produced in the infamous French regions, you are pretty much just buying the standard sparkling wine.

You should also make sure that the bottle is spelled “Champagne”, with a capital C. French manufacturers are very protective of this very name, and therefore are the only ones that are authorized to use it. Champagne is made using three different types of grape - Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.

Noir and Meunier are types of black grapes, while the well known Chardonnay is a type of white grape. The label on the bottle will signify what type of Champagne you are buying, so you’ll know what flavor to expect. There are also types of this wine that are a blend of different grapes, providing quite an exquisite taste to say the least.

Much like sparkling wine, Champagne is very common with celebrations and such. Although it is actually considered to be a type of sparkling wine, Champagne is much better. You have to be careful where you buy it though, as a lot of manufacturers like to use cheaper grapes, which don’t taste the same. If you have ever tasted this wine before - you’ll know first hand what quality tastes like.

A lot of people prefer Champagne because of the bubbles that are known to spew forth once a bottle has been uncorked. The bubbles that spew from this wine are the result of tiny drops of liquid that are disturbed by the carbonic acid gas. Once the liquid is disturbed, the bubbles form and short out of the bottle.

This is a natural reaction of the double fermentation process that can only be found with a bottle of Champagne. The next time you have a celebration and need something to make the celebration a bit more interesting, you should grab a bottle of Champagne. Few things compliment a celebration like the bursting bubbles of a fine bottle.

You can find quality Champagne at ABC stores or other stores that sell alcoholic beverages. Even though it may cost you a bit of money - when you pop the top you’ll be glad you bought it.

How You Can Make Homemade Wine

Wine has been an important part of any occasion. It is commonly made from fermented grape juice, flowers, and grains. Countries like Italy, Portugal, United States, and Argentina are among the largest exporters of different wines.

The most expensive kind of wine is called “vintage”. Vintage wines are made from the highest quality grapes that are harvested several years before they are sold to the public.
While some wines are very expensive, there are some of good quality and that are relatively inexpensive. Among these wines are homemade wines that are commonly served to show old English hospitality.

Home winemaking is an exciting hobbiy designed for people who love social drinking or who are fond of giving away wine as gifts. Here are some tips on how to make homemade wine:

1.Get fresh produce from fields and orchards that let buyers pick their own fruits. Another option is getting fruit concentrate being sold by local winemaking stores.

2.Buy equipment needed in home winemaking. These are fermentation locks, Demijohns, plastic funnels, trial jars, siphon tubes, and wine bottles with corks.

3.Gather necessary ingredients to put flavor and a distinct taste to the wine. These are yeast, pectic enzyme, wine tannin, acid blend, and campden tablets.

4.Get recipies of the favorite wines to have accurate information about the exact amount of ingredients to use. The tip in making the best wine is accurately mixing ingredients to achieve desired taste.

5.Use fermentation bags in collecting pulp and submerge it into the wine mixture. Set aside covered fermenter within 24 hours.

6.Put yeast on the grape juice surface and cover it. Let the mixture ferment within 7 days.

7.After 7 days, discard pulp and siphon the mixture to prepare for secondary fermenter.

8.Add water to the wine mixture and allow it to ferment for 4-6 weeks or until it appears completely clear. Use hydrometer to make sure fermentation has been completed. Hydrometer should show 0.989 and 0.990 on its gravity scale.

9.The wine should be cleared completely after following the first 8 steps. After that, siphon the wine and add five crushed campden tablets.

10.Bottle the homemade wine and let it age.

Today, the best wines on the market are home made. They are surprisingly delicious and inexpensive. Anyone can make wine by simply following these 10 basic steps and then you can start impressing friends and family members during get-togethers.
